Pantone Colour of 2018 is Ultraviolet
5 Ways To BRING The Effervescence!
“In a world divided by colour, be ultraviolet.” Rose Hummingbird
The most chromatic moment in the calendar is surely that moment when Pantone reveals its “colour” for the upcoming year. And where last year we had greens and soft pinks, the powers that be have decided that a burning hot ultraviolet is the only way forward for 2018!!
Ultraviolet is not a color that most humans can see because it’s outside the visible spectrum, making it enigmatic and mysterious. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come,” says Leatrice Eiseman, director of Pantone’s Color.
Of course we can’t walk around all day under an actual ultraviolet light, but its muted twin (the beautiful colour violet itself) can manifest itself in trends across our lifestyles. Splashes and swathes of violet will be evident everywhere one looks: from fashion, drinks, hair dye, floral arrangements as well as event decor!
From rich matte lipsticks to thick liquid eye-liner, the beauty counters of this world will be “violet-happy” all through 2018! Stunning, and surprisingly sumptuous, shades of violet are the rage for hair dyes as seen on the catwalks at the moment. It’s an easy way to inject the trend but on a more temporary level. Purposely made party make-up shows up under the ultraviolet lights of a club or party night, but hides the “brightness” when you’re out of the lights.
In the same way, white tattoos are now on the rise, which slips easily into the ultra violet trend, as they can only be seen under “those” lights!
Whether it be for a party or simply for adding to the beauty of your home, flowers are ALWAYS an immediate and an easily replaceable way to show off a colour trend. Anemones, hydrangeas or even (shocker!), violets themselves are a must this year, throughout the seasons.
With home Decor, as with fashion, one can choose to be as extreme, or not, as one wishes, and still incorporate a nod to the latest shades. So go mad, paint the walls and change the curtains – absolutely. But no-one shall think less of you for merely introducing a statement piece to the landscape. Say an armchair, a side table, or even just a vase that will establish your complete understanding of the Pantone world and what it expects from you this year!
4. Food & Beverages:
The fact that violets are edible, in itself will prompt all sorts of violet additions to food fare and certainly cocktails! To make your tipple Pantone-friendly, simply add Grape Shnapps to anything!! And there’s always the classic Cassis Liqueur, which also adds a gorgeous dark purple hue to a drink…born from the delicious Kir Royale Cocktail.
Violet frosting will adorn every macaroon and cake-pop and lets not even BEGIN discussing wedding cakes!
5. Events and Parties:
It goes without saying that all the above ideas for “pantoning” your lifestyle trends can be so easily transported into any event you are having, from corporate party to intimate wedding to family Xmas festivities.
Start with the invites, onto escort cards, florals, tablescapes, dancefloor, lighting, dessert tables, the list in completely endless! As with home decor, it can either take over the show or establish itself in simple statement pieces, like bridesmaid dresses or the flowers or the signature cocktail.
Ultraviolet is a complex hue, lending itself to nuances and thoughts of the unknown and the bigger universe. So surrender yourself to the different depths and folds of violet and may 2018 be your brightest, most explorative year yet!
