A Classic English Garden Party With A Twist

The trend for all things quintessentially English is back this Summer and there’s no better way to honour the source of its resurgence – the ever popular ITV series Downton Abbey – than with an elegant garden party.

Our brand partner, Farley Prop Hire, know exactly what we mean when we say ‘Downton Abbey style’ as they supply many of the props for the TV series and can help you style and create your very own Downton garden tea party.

The family run business, that specialise in period pieces, has been supplying authentic and original props for feature films and TV productions, special events and celebrity weddings for more than fifty years.

Francesca Farley knows just what you need to complete the look: “No Downton garden party is complete without silver tea trays, tea sets and some cake stands.”  And when it comes to the furniture and finishing touches, Farley Prop Hire can not only guide you, but actually provide you with everything you’ll need.  Francesca continues: “Furniture-wise you’re best to go with traditional white wrought iron garden tables and chairs, wooden benches, picnic rugs, throws and cushions.  And we wouldn’t recommend run of the mill table cloths – look for table linen with crochet or lace detailing to really help set the scene.  Depending on how much room you have, a white gazebo, white and green flower displays in pale stone urns and some neutral coloured bunting will really help finish the look off but, whetver you do, don’t forget the croquet set!”

And when it comes to what to serve your guests, Tory Whittington, from our brand partner Caper & Berry, says: “Keep it British and keep it seasonal with gorgeous treats like miniature victoria sponge cakes, scones with homemade jam and clotted cream and, of course, cucumber sandwiches!”  Caper & Berry are known for their creative catering and suggest that you ramp it up for the adult guests and offer afternoon tea with a twist.  Tory continues: “We do cocktail and canape combos which go down a treat.  Mojito shots served with a Mojito macaron, Peach Bellini coupled with a Peach Bellini profierole or a Pisco Sour chased down with a Pisco flavoured marshmallow bite.  We alo make a Pimms cupcake that has a shot of Pimms in it – now, you can’t get much more British than that, can you?”
